Shaheed Beheshti School of Pharmacy is one of the top three pharmacy schools in Iran located in Tehran, the metropolis capital. This school offers a Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm.D.) for those students who can pass a 5 to 6-year of taught courses successfully. Each academic year consists of two semesters (Spring and Winter). In overall, there are 203 credits (including 8 thesis credits) in the Pharm.D. program and students who successfully complete the assessed components of this program will be awarded a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. After passing 140 credits students should be involved in designing and carrying out a research thesis under supervision of a faculty member. This will be accomplished with an official viva in the presence of a panel of expert adjudicators. Like many other countries, pharmacists in Iran are mainly employed in community pharmacies, hospitals or other health care institutions; and rarely in pharmaceutical organizations and academia. The course is essentially developed to provide key knowledge and skills required for graduates to act as a consultant for patients and health care teams. This will be attained by offering interactive teaching modules in the five main fields of pharmaceutical sciences including medicinal chemistry, pharmacognosy and traditional medicine, pharmacology and toxicology, pharmaceutics and clinical pharmacy. Currently, there are about 300 Pharm.D. and more than 50 Ph.D. students registered at the school. 35 faculty members are directly involved in teaching/supervising these students. A tutorial system is constructed so that each faculty member is concerned for guidance and advice of a group of students during their university life. A very responsive administrative staff is also ready to look after students’ study. We aim to provide a friendly and supportive community in which the contribution of all members including students, staff and faculty members is recognized and valued. |
